Eggplant Season in Full Swing with Many Varieties to Choose From

Posted by Alex on 07 Jan 2013 / 0 Comment

When one thinks of berries, eggplant (known as “aubergine” if you are in Canada or France) isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind. Surprisingly, eggplant is not only classified as a berry — but is part of the nightshade family as well, meaning it is closely related to the tomato and potato.

Eggplants grace the plates of households the world over, with predominant popularity among Middle Eastern, South Asian, French and Italian consumers.  Culinary professionals also favor eggplant for its versatility and ability to blend well with a bevy of spices and flavors.  It is so versatile that chefs incorporate the eggplant into recipes ranging from soups to entrees, even candied in eggplant preserves!

There are multiple eggplant varieties making a debut in foodservice establishments and dining room tables across the country, and Ciruli Brothers is proud to say that we have a hand in getting them there.  We have been selling eggplant for three generations and we know a great deal about their growing, shipping and handling.

Did you know that the world has devoted more than 4 million acres of land to growing and cultivating this crop?  Our eggplant is currently grown and packed fresh from Culiacan, Sinaloa.  In fact, this is one of west Mexico’s leading export commodities during the winter and spring months.  You can procure fresh eggplant from Ciruli Brothers from November through early May in the following varieties:

Regular (also known as American or Classic eggplant).  This is large, oblong and has a dark purple hue with a green calyx.  Ciruli Brothers markets this eggplant under the Felicimo™, Azteca™ and Rayo™ brands.

Italian eggplant.  This is smaller, thinner, slightly elongated, and purple.  It is marketed under the Campaña™ brand name.

Hindu (Indian) eggplant is small (no bigger than the size of an egg), round, and purple. It is also marketed under the Campaña™ label.

Our sales team is here to help you grow eggplant sales by providing you with consistent quality and availability.  We also offer POS materials that include photographs and recipes featuring various eggplant varieties.  As a value added service to our customers, Ciruli Brothers also sponsor s a website (www.ILoveEggplant.com) to help educate consumers on how to select, store, and prepare this tasty vegetable.
